Travels with Bonnie: Lake Willoughby in Summer

Lake Willoughby sits on an easterly line between Crystal Lake (Barton, lower left map below) and Island Pond.

At the northern end in Westmore there's a large, public beach. At the southern end there's a smaller beach with private camp sites and boat moorings.

A little less than five miles in length, the Lake is long and narrow and it is sandwiched between spectacular high rocky cliffs on its west side and impressive stone bluffs to the east.

The map above outlines some of the many possible routes between the border area near me and Lake Willoughby. These rides are mostly between 40 and 70 miles and up to 100. Pretty hard to get bored with a playground like this! But there are even more playgrounds nearby! What's a motorcyclist to do?

Willoughby in the Summer

Northern end of Lake Willoughby. Catching up on reading on a hazy summer day.

Packing up at day's end.

Route 5A southbound along the eastern shore of Lake Willoughby offers fabulous views of spectacular cliffs plunging straight down into the Lake on the western side.

There are several small stopping areas on both sides of 5A which offer great views of the Lake and surroundings. One unobtrusive stopping place is the local swimming hole. Stop by. Take a plunge.

Taking the plunge.

Ok, my turn.

Climbing out

Looking north from the beach and marina at the southern end. Route 5A runs along the shoreline to the right hand side.
